Permanent hair removal is unfortunately almost impossible to achieve. Until now many manufacturers of creams and lotions have claimed permanent removal but the hair keeps growing back. Two methods are being used at the moment in salons that promise permanent removal, but most people find that after 6 or 7 visits the hair is finer but still grows back. Treatment is very expensive over a period of time and can be quite uncomfortable.

The two main methods salons use are laser treatment, where the laser is targeted over a small area and a pulse is sent into the follicle every second and damages it until the hair doesn’t grow. A local anaesthetic is used to numb the skin and you can look blotchy for a day or two after treatment. Hairs tend to be missed and repeat visits are needed.

The other method is electrolysis. This is where an electric shock is sent into each individual hair follicle and shocks the follicle into not growing anymore. This is a long process and also can require a local anaesthetic to numb the skin. As in the former example, hairs can be missed and repeat visits are required.

Until a confirmed method of permanent removal is found, it may be cheaper and less painful to continue using gels and wax to remove unwanted hairs. This of course can be done at home for a fraction of the cost and inconvenience of salon treatments.
